Litter Free Auroville - Everyone can make a difference!
Solid Waste Management (SWM) is becoming a burning issue the world over. As Auroville aspires to be the ‘City the Earth needs’, we, the youth of Auroville, would like to create a successful model for improved SWM. SomaWaste Management has launched an educational campaign to address this important issue within Auroville.
This will culminate in a massive litter clean-up to be held on January 29th 2010, with a target of over 1000 people participating from schools, units, and communities. On that day, collected waste will be brought to Certitude sports ground, where there will be an interactive exhibition on the impacts of waste, waste segregation, and how to reduce one's waste. Later in the day, there will also be a variety of events based on the theme of SWM (e.g. films, a Trashion show, a play and a concert). The final, and most crucial, aspect of this campaign is to create a platform to support long-term change in the waste management practices within Auroville and in collaboration with the Eco service, translate ideas into concrete action.
Goals
- Waste avoidance and reduction
- Pollution free environment
These are high aspirations and long term goals, but we felt that all initiatives should be steps forward towards achieving these goals.
Objectives
The objectives are focused on what we want to specifically achieve through the LFA campaign. These give us a framework for our action plan.
- Awareness: To promote and create awareness on waste and the impacts it has on the environment (air, water, soil).
- Actual waste clean-up: To have the highest community participation in AV to date in collecting litter. To target a minimum of 50% of the communities population.
- Create a platform for change: To create an interactive platform for the exchange and dissemination of ideas and advocacy of best practices. Develop ideas and translate them into action which would be a step towards reaching our goals.
